Mold and its negative effects
For household/ Hotel mold, life doesn’t get much better than an air conditioner drip pan. Your A/C unit makes more than cool air, it produces water — Litres of it. When humid air like we have here in Mumbai is drawn over the frigid evaporator coil, water vapor in the air condenses to liquid.
This condensation drains off the coil and into the drip pan beneath the air handler where it’s channeled down a drain line into the home sewer system. A central air conditioner may produce between five and 20 litres of water every day during summer.
A continuously wet drip pan in a Room is a mold colony waiting to happen. Food is not a problem. Microscopic airborne organic particles from around the home are sucked into the return ducts of an air conditioner and washed down into the drip pan. This mix of nutrients and moisture, plus heat and darkness, makes the drip pan an ideal breeding ground for mold. Mold growth in the drip pan can have two bad consequences: • Mold forms a jelly-like consistency that may plug the drip pan drain lines.
As your air conditioner produces up to 20 liters of water a day, a drip pan that doesn’t drain can quickly become a disaster. Due to the location of most air conditioners, overflow may occur for some time before it’s noticed by occupants. Potentially hundreds of liters of water could silently damage your home’s structure and stored possessions. Keeping the drain lines of your A/C open and running is critical to preventing water damage. • Mold spreads by releasing millions of airborne mold spores per hour. From their home base in the drip pan under your air conditioner, these microscopic particulates are perfectly located to infiltrate the air path of your air conditioner. Once inside the system airflow, they can circulate through the Home or Office and contaminate your indoor air quality.
Mold spores are known allergens and may cause symptoms such as breathing difficulties, nasal congestion, and eye irritation in sensitive individuals. Mold has also been implicated in the development of childhood asthma. Coil*Tech Condensate Drain Cleaner (CDC) CDC is a GREEN, safe, non-aerosol, residue-free product designed to help eliminate maintenance problems, such as odor, overflows, and a corrosive environment which are caused by blocked condensate drain pans and lines, in cooling and refrigeration equipment.
CDC is formulated from a proprietary blend of a unique surfactant, disinfectant, dispersant and corrosion inhibitor, encapsulated in a biodegradable polymeric mix. CDC works by penetrating the impurities (dust, slime, bacteria, mold etc.) found on the drain pans and lines, eliminating, dispersing and suspending them, allowing them to flow away into the drain easily with the condensate water. As these impurities do not have the chance to settle and accumulate, blockages, bacteria growth and mold growth in the drain pans and lines are prevented.
